When Family Betrays: A Christmas Break-In Story
Last Christmas brought an unwelcome surprise that no one should ever have to experience - a betrayal from within my own family. What should have been a time of celebration instead became a stark reminder that trust, once broken, leaves deep wounds that take time to heal.
On December 25th, 2024, while I was away, my home in St. Louis became the target of a calculated break-in. The perpetrators weren't strangers, but my own cousin and her 12-year-old child. The security footage tells a chilling story - captured in stark black and white, showing them attempting to cover their tracks by tampering with my DVR and smart home systems.

What they didn't count on was the resilience of modern technology. Despite their attempts to erase their digital footprints, we were able to restore the data, providing clear evidence of their actions. The surveillance image above shows one of the intruders attempting to manipulate the security systems, unaware that their actions were being recorded through multiple redundant systems.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder about the importance of comprehensive home security, even when - or perhaps especially when - the threat comes from those we should be able to trust. While the emotional impact of family betrayal runs deep, the practical lessons are equally important: backup systems, redundant recording methods, and professional security installations proved invaluable in documenting and proving what transpired.
It's not easy sharing such a personal story, but I believe it's important to break the silence around family-perpetrated crimes. These situations are more common than many realize, and the shame often keeps victims quiet. But silence only serves to protect those who exploit family bonds for their own gain.
The aftermath of this incident has led to necessary but difficult decisions regarding family boundaries and security measures. While I won't be sharing the legal consequences here out of respect for the minor involved, I will say that actions have consequences, and family ties don't exempt anyone from responsibility for their choices.
For those who might be dealing with similar situations, remember that you're not alone, and it's okay to protect yourself - even from family. Sometimes, the hardest lessons come wrapped in the most painful packages, but they teach us the most about resilience, boundaries, and the importance of protecting what matters.
